Garden Route – Day 6

mossel Bay and (half way) to Riversdale

Day 6  – Short, sweet and relaxed
Today was a short, sweet and relaxed day for Brigit thanks to a couple of beekeepers who stopped when she was slowly trying to make her way up a long hill and said, “today is Sunday, we want to give you a lift.” Annemarie, a teacher, and Gavin, a professional beekeeper, were on their way from Jeffrey’s Bay to their beehives doing over 600 km to put up boxes for new swarms.

They agree with farmers where they can put them up, giving them a livelihood and the farmers the much needed pollination of their fields.
So after only 40km cycling and another 50km riding with them in their truck and chatting about South Africa, bees and the importance of education, Brigit went into this solemn town Riversdale, where allegedly the sleeping beauty is resting. A mountain looks like a young women lying on her back. Sundays in this town are calm. People sit around, chat, youths watching videos on their phones. But as in every town she had gone through, she also saw desperate living conditions. As she is told, they are unofficial settlements, meaning that the government doesn’t put in facilities like water.
Seeing these desperate situations, Brigit is thinking that there is need in South Africa after all to offer empowermefirst’s education.
We’re raising funds for 50 students. Please support us and win a raffle prize.
